Dijon Highlights

We spent our first night in Burgundy is a surprisingly beautiful city of Dijon. Home to Medieval, Gothic, & Renaissance architecture, we loved walking around the city on our first night and then getting in a quick historical walking tour around the city. Dijon has been beautifully preserved since the 12th century. The large amount of Medieval architecture was especially impressive.

During our stay we learned that Burgundy used to be it’s own nation-state in the 12th/13th centuries. Due to the amazing wineries, the Dukes of Burgundy became very rich. In particular, there were 4 Dukes on Burgundy who built much of the grand cathedrals of the city. Due to it’s growth, France (a newly-created Catholic state that was run by the newly-crowned Clovis) quickly sought to merge with Burgundy in the 15th century.

The owl is a good luck charm in Dijon -- this was a lucky owl sculpted into the church in Dijon.
